Wedding Photo Tips
Soon after a client books our studio, the most common question we hear is, “How do we take good pictures?” The answer is not hidden inside the perfect wedding gown glistening with Svwarski crystals. It’s not buried in the bud of the white roses tipped in pink that fill your bouquet. It’s not even at the your alter or on the stairs of your Church or in the local park. There are two secrets of good wedding photography: time & love. The most common mistake bride’s make is limiting a photographer’s time. The right photos have to be taken at the right time. It is nearly impossible for a photographer to capture relaxed family images when everyone is rushing around with excitement and there is a room full of guests waiting to start dinner. It is better to forgo the notion of not seeing one another before the wedding as a both a courtesy to your guests and as a virtual guarantee to your photographer that they will have the time they need to pose your family session properly. It is also a great idea to appoint a few relatives to help gather together the necessary family needed for the session. Having someone else on hand to collect family from various places around the venue will save your photographer’s time for actually taking photos, which will result in less rushing and more relaxing for everyone. If you do not want to see each other before the wedding be sure to book a cocktail hour with your reception venue. This will keep your guests busy while the photo session takes place. Even before you get to this stage, keep your timing in mind to accommodate your photographer’s style. Contemporary coverage which incorporates both traditional coverage and photojournalistic coverage takes a good deal of time. The rule of thumb in the industry is a minimum of two to three hours for coverage that won’t compromise quality while producing quantity. Having several different poses from the standard four eyes at the camera, to side shots, wide shots or even upside down shots will add to the creative appeal of your finished album. This kind of creativity takes time, time and… more time! When booking your hair and make-up sessions, book them early in the morning and don’t leave one hairdresser to create styles for an entire wedding party. One last note about time is to remember that this is your day. While you might think spending a huge chunk of it with your photographer is a “waste” of time, you’re wrong. Let’s suppose you want to do one hour of photos before your ceremony, because let’s face it, everyone hates photos and everyone hates standing around. For example let’s look at a typical day with a one hour session. That will leave you, the bride & the groom, standing around for eight hours of the day with nothing to do, and… NOT TOGETHER! It makes far more sense to plan hair and make-up early, and start your wedding session earlier in the day because then you can really see each other and spend some quality time together. This THE BEST way to get fantastic romantic images of your day, in a relaxed environment where you can be alone together, talking and laughing while your photographer captures these tender moments which will be over all too soon. Before you know it you’ll be saying “I do,” shaking hands, dancing your first dance, eating cake, shaking more hands and handing out a few hugs and talking with long lost relatives that are twice removed on your mothers side, etc, etc, etc. This is the biggest day of your life, so make sure you get to spend it together! Last but not least, the most important aspect of good wedding coverage is love. The love you two have for each other has brought you to this process of planning your wedding. More important than the color of your lipstick or the polish on his shoes is the love in your eyes. OK, it sounds cliché and corny, but it is just so true. Everyone is beautiful on their wedding day, not because of the dress, but because of the day. A day rooted in love and beauty. This is the person who sees you for who you are and loves you with every ounce of their being. How can that not photograph well? So, relax, talk to your photographer and make sure they have all the time they need to capture your day the way you want it captured and remember to love. It’s just that simple.
