Symphony Orchestra's See and hear the "classical stars of tomorrow" as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents Young Artists on April 14th and 15th at Skyview H.S. Concert Hall, 1300 NW 139th Street, Vancouver. Maestro Salvador Brotons conducts the winners of the Symphony's 13th Annual Young Artists Competition. Performances are Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are just $5 for students, $20 for seniors, $25 for general admission and $35 for reserved seating. Tickets for performances are available at Beacock's Music (east side), Music World (Hazel Dell), and Erik Runyan Jewelers (downtown). Tickets are also available by phone at (360) 735-7278, and at the door on the day of the concert. The Young Artists concert is a popular family event and children are encouraged to attend. Opening Notes, a lively and informative talk about the music and composers, begins one hour before each concert. Our 2007 winners: Vivian Chang, 14, Beaverton, OR, started studying the piano at age six. She is a freshman at Southridge High School where she is the piano accompanist for the school’s Concert Choir. Ms. Chang will perform Piano Concerto, G major, 1st mvmt. by Ravel. Nanao Yamada, 14, Wilsonville, OR began studying the violin at the age of eight. She is a freshman at Wilsonville High School and the Concertmistress in her school orchestra. Ms. Yamada will perform Violin Concerto, E minor, 1st mvmt. by Mendelsohn. Nicole Skau, 16, Portland, OR, has been playing the alto sax for six years. She is a junior at David Douglas High School and is involved in the school's wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, marching band, and football pep band. Ms. Skau will perform Concertino da camera by Ibert. The winners were chosen from nine finalists who performed at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra's annual competition on Sunday, February 18th, 2007 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vancouver. The Symphony began having the Young Artists Competition in 1995 to bring attention to the outstanding talented young musicians in our area. The performance begins with a special "guest conductor." Mr. Tatsuo Ito, Executive Vice President of Vancouver-based SEH America, Inc., will lead the the Symphony in Bizet's L´Arlesiene- Farandole. Mr. Ito was the winner of the "guest baton" and the opportunity to lead the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at last year's Symphony gala fundraiser. Salvador Brotons and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will also perform Reels and Reveries by Rhodes. The performance ends with Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, with guest narrator John Pitman, Music Director and program host for KPBS All Classical 89.9 radio. About The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra: The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, led by internationally known conductor and composer Salvador Brotons, is a 70-member professional orchestra presenting outstanding guest artists and varied programs October through May in a six-concert season.
