Rushing Water Yoga
Note & Schedule Change
Greetings All,
I hope this note finds
you well. This week in class we have started our
studies of the Niyamas.
The five Niyamas are as follows:
-
Saucha, Purity.
This is a commitment to purity internally and
externally.
-
Santosa,
Contentment. This is a commitment to being
content and reducing desires and becoming
cheerful and creating balance of mind.
-
Tapas, Austerity
(Discipline). This is a commitment to being
disciplined in the mind and body and directing
the mind towards the self within.
-
Svadhyaya, Study
the source of our actions. This is a commitment
to continuing to study and learn and search for
truth and self-realization and remembering to
“be aware”.
-
Isvara Pranidhana,
Surrender to the source of our actions. This is
a commitment to surrendering to the powers that
be and abiding to the greater will.
-
BKS Iyengar writes
in “Light on the Yoga Sutras”.
“As yama is universal
social practice, niyama evolves from individual
practices necessary to build up the sadhaka’s own
character…The principles of niyama that are
encompassed by kriyayoga emphasize the
importance of self-discipline. Mastery of yoga
would be unrealizable without the observance of the
ethical principles of yama and niyama… Observance of
niyama develops friendliness, compassion, and
indifference, and is a further aid in cleansing the
body, mind and intelligence.”
The task for the
student of Yoga is to first relate the Niymas to
their practice and then take this learning off of
the mat and into their relationships. No small
task.
* I wanted to let you all know that the Wednesday
(6-7:30 pm) and Thursday (7:15-8:45 pm) beginning
level classes are temporarily not being held due to
lack of enrollment. Please call or email the studio
if you are interested in classes at that time.
If you are interested in classes at these times
please call or email the studio.
Namaste'
