Fight Or Flight

When the feeling of stress becomes evident in your body, the pituitary system launches the fight-or-flight response. This is the physiological power to fight off danger. Stress hormones in the blood stream constrict the blood vessels forcing digestion energy to nourish the extremities so that you can do battle or … run like crazy. Blood flow to the visceral organs is inhibited so that your arms and legs can work at their greatest capacity.

The problem is, for most people, when you’re stressed you’re not really fighting off a bear or a mugger, you’re typically sitting at dinner or in your car. Since during the stress response the blood’s nourishment is moving away from organs, they can’t function normally. You trying to think, digest a steak, grow new cells, or interact socially while all of your bloods is in your feet! Stress literally turns the priorities of your body upside down. Where the priority should be relaxed, healthy blood vessels and organ and cellular function, during flight or fight it becomes running and punching. 

Emotionally and spiritually, stress is also upside down. We were born to align ourselves with a natural order, yet we spend our lives seeking control. People’s response to the terms “Natural Healthcare” or “Wellness” can be a funny one. Can you blame them? What do those things mean anyway?

First of all, everything comes from nature at some point. I’m flabbergasted by what’s called “natural” or “health” food. Natural healers can be absolutely anyone with a vitamin or herb in their hands. And what about the term wellness? Abortion centers will often call themselves Women’s Wellness Centers!

Chiropractors live by a new term called “Maximized Living” (ML).™ The idea of ML is to maximize the natural, God-given capacity of the human body and it’s ability to heal itself by aligning it with the natural order. 

For example: to align yourself with natural order, you should move regularly (exercise) and eat more of what is grown and less of what is produced in a lab. Look to do and ingest things that do not interfere with normal function and you will allow your body to express its optimum potential for health, appearance, and healing. Change, manipulate, subluxate, or impose the will of man on your body and something or someone eventually gets hurt.

Natural order as applied to stress is even simpler–yet tougher to pull off. We were born to live in community with others. This is very simply accomplished through a spirit of cooperation and service and not one of control and servitude. Most stress occurs when people or events get in your way, apparently not understanding that the Universe does in fact revolve around you. It also comes from a lack of trust in the process of life. There’s a great saying that goes, “Worrying works—99% of the things I worry about never happen.”

When we put others first, look for win-win situations in all of life’s circumstances, avoid greed, rebuke envy, and allow things to happen naturally—you are working in harmony with natural order and God’s will.  This is how you live right-side up in an upside-down world!
